Il locale situato all'angolo tra Post Street e Steiner Street è già uno dei templi del musica in quegli anni. Vi hanno suonato praticamente tutti quelli che contano: The Allman Brothers Band, Cream, Electric Light Orchestra, Grateful Dead, Jimmi Hendrix... Dal 1971 è gestito dal leggendario promoter musicale Bill Graham. Siamo verso la fine del Darkness Tour e sul palco quel 15 dicembre di trent'anni fa c'è un Bruce Springsteen in una forma smagliante che forse non sa ancora che quello diventerà uno degli show più famosi della sua carriera. Una di quelle serate che negli anni alimenteranno il mito delle sue performance live, come eventi imperdibili e indimenticabili. Lo show viene trasmesso in diretta radiofonica sulla West Coast dalla KSAN-FM di San Francisco e la registrazione della stessa viene immediatamente utilzzata dai bootleggers. Facendo un balzo indietro di vent'anni, alla fine degli anni ottanta, è bello ricordare che uno dei primi bootleg in circolazione su CD fu proprio "Live in The Promised Land" (Great Dane) con la registrazione di questo show. In realtà il nastro utilizzato per l'incisione di questo bootleg è quello proveniente direttamente dal mixer della band. La confezione era arricchita da un libretto di sedici pagine con la trascrizione, sia in inglese che in italiano, degli intermezzi parlati. |Erroneamente in tutte le incisioni compare in chiusura "Quarter To Three", anche se è ormai certo che quella sera non fu eseguita. La testimonianza di uno spettatore presente allo show conferma la mancanza. Lo spettacolo sembrava terminato e la band se ne era andata ma nessun aveva lasciato il proprio posto. I circa 5000 presenti cominciarono a rumoreggiare e tutti gridavano: "Bruuuuuce!". Eccolo ricomparire sul palco con la band: "Ora che la radio è spenta [la diretta radiofonica era terminata ndr] ho ancora qualcosa per voi ragazzi. Questa è la prima canzone che ho imparato a suonare con la chitarra". Salta in piedi sugli amplificatori e attacca una grande versione di Twist & Shout. Chi c'era non può dimenticarlo. Di quest'ultimo brano non esiste nessuna registrazione. La "Quarter To Three" usata nei bootleg non proviene nemmeno dalla serata successiva (16/12), in quanto ad un confronto l'audio appare troppo diverso.
