Jack può fare affidamento solo sull'avvocato che gli è stato assegnato d'ufficio, la giovane Shen Yuelin, che gli consiglia di dichiararsi colpevole. Ma Jack non intende accettare, riesce, attraverso molti colloqui, a convincere Shen della propria innocenza, cosicchè anche lei mette in atto ogni cavillo legale era guadagnare tempo e riuscire a capire come sono andati i fatti. Sapendo di rischiare in ogni momento la vita, Jack riesce a fuggire dalla prigione, a svolgere indagini, a fare a mano a mano luce sull'accaduto.
