dal 1997 al 2004 i cinque album realizzati da daniel gildenlöw e compagni hanno fatto scoprire una nuova dimensione a chi aveva banalizzato la concezione di progressive metal, riducendola a pura coincidenza con i dream theater: sono pertanto nati entropia, one hour by the concrete lake, the perfect element i e remedy lane, quattro capolavori che hanno raccontato la storia di un gruppo in costante evoluzione e desideroso di far distinguere ciascuna opera per gli elementi unici in essa contenuti. be ha invece diviso la critica tra coloro che hanno apprezzato le particolari sonorità acustiche proposte e chi invece si è sentito "tradito" da una band che in pochi anni ha sconvolto il panorama internazionale, grazie anche al carisma del suo front-man. giunti nel 2007, scarsick si prefigura come il sesto album di studio, nonché sesto concept ideato da daniel. si deve quasi del tutto tralasciare la matrice progressive che ha contraddistinto il passato dei pain of salvation, perché scarsick è sinonimo di sperimentazione tra altri generi musicali, tutti riconducibili però agli elementi che hanno reso celebre il quartetto (dopo la dipartita di kristoffer gildenlöw al basso) di eskilstuna. l'album, composto da dieci canzoni, per un totale di ben 67 minuti di musica, ha un feeling non parecchio appetibile al primo impatto, che spiazza l'ascoltatore, ma acquista sicurezza via via che le sue atmosfere vengono esplorate approfonditamente. numerose le reminescenze da stili distanti dalla dimensione tipica dei pain of salvation, ad iniziare dal sound faith no more proposto nella title-track d'apertura: se già daniel in passato aveva preannunciato un'evoluzione del suo cantato attraverso le sezioni rap di splendide tracce come ending theme, in scarsick dà pienamente prova di questa sua attitudine vocale, proiettandosi verso toni più vicini al crossover che al progressive. l'opener lascia trasparire idee complesse e ricercate, che non si esauriscono solo nel cambiamento di stile, ma che interessano interamente l'approccio dei pain of salvation alla canzone: l'unica pecca riscontrabile in scarsick è difatti la ripetitività di alcuni passaggi, come il riff portante o la sezione più distesa, che dimostrano il forte attaccamento alle sonorità di faith no more o sleepytime gorilla museum. tra le tracce migliori dell'album si segnala spitfall, un tenebroso confronto rap tra daniel e l'ascoltatore, stregato dal ritmo scandito dalle taglienti parole e coinvolto da un refrain melodico ed inatteso. la tensione che traspare dalla sfuriata rap è notevole ma i pain of salvation sanno mantenere un filo di contatto con tutto ciò che hanno prodotto nella loro carriera discografica. la più chiara testimonianza del permanere di innumerevoli aspetti del vecchio stile è regalata dalla commovente cribcaged, soffice canzone che riporta indietro la memoria fino allo struggente the perfect element i, ripercorso dalla band in diversi temi durante tutto scarsick. la voce di gildenlöw assume un tono sentito e trascinante, espressivo al massimo ed incisivo al tempo stesso, garantendo una resa eccezionale e degna dei precedenti album. alcuni critici e fans avevano addirittura ipotizzato che scarsick fosse il tanto atteso the perfect element ii, ma questa congettura non ha trovato conferma da parte della formazione scandinava;
